How to Check Your Own FMCSA Clearinghouse Record

The FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is not a secret database. As a commercial driver, you have a federal right to view exactly what employers see when they run a query on your CDL. Here is exactly how to check your record.

Step 1: Go to the Official Website

Ensure you are on the correct government website. There are many third-party scam sites that will try to charge you a fee to "check your record." Checking your own record is 100% free.

Navigate to: clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov

Step 2: Log In via Login.gov

The FMCSA uses Login.gov as its secure gateway. If you already have a Login.gov account (from TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, or other federal services), you can use those credentials. If not, you will need to create an account using an email address and set up two-factor authentication (usually a text message to your phone).

Step 3: Register as a Driver

Once authenticated through Login.gov, you will be redirected back to the Clearinghouse. If this is your first time, you must select your role. Select "Driver."

You will need to input your Commercial Driver's License (CDL) number and the state of issuance. The system will verify this information against state databases.

Step 4: View Your Dashboard

Once your CDL is verified, you will land on your Driver Dashboard. This dashboard clearly displays your current status:

• Not Prohibited: You are clear to drive. There are no unresolved violations.
• Prohibited: You have an active violation and are not allowed to operate a CMV. You must complete the SAP Return-to-Duty process.

If you have a violation, you can click into it to see the exact details: the date of the violation, the type of test (e.g., pre-employment, random), the employer who reported it, and the type of violation (e.g., positive for marijuana, refusal to test).
