Can I Speed Up the DOT SAP Process?

Updated: 20264 Min ReadTips

When you're out of work due to a DOT drug or alcohol violation, every passing day is lost income. While you cannot "cheat" or "skip" the federally mandated steps, there are completely legal ways to accelerate the Return-to-Duty (RTD) process so you can get back on the road as quickly as possible.

1. Do Not Delay Finding a SAP

The biggest delay for most drivers happens at step one. Many drivers wait weeks or months hoping the violation will disappear, or they struggle to save the money for the evaluation.

Action Step: Start searching for a DOT-qualified SAP the very same day you fail your test. The sooner you complete your initial evaluation, the sooner you can start your prescribed education. Look for SAP providers that offer flexible payment plans (like Focus7 LLC) so you don't have to wait to get started.

2. Ask for Virtual (Telehealth) Evaluations

Scheduling an in-person appointment often means waiting weeks for a slot to open up in your local area. However, the DOT now allows SAP evaluations to be conducted securely via video conference (Telehealth).

Action Step: Ask the SAP if they conduct virtual evaluations. Virtual appointments are often much easier to schedule, sometimes allowing you to be seen within 24 to 48 hours.

The "Honesty" Shortcut

It sounds counter-intuitive, but being brutally honest during your initial evaluation is the fastest way through the program. If a SAP catches you lying or trying to minimize your substance use, they are legally required to assume the worst and will prescribe a longer, more intensive treatment plan.

3. Treat the Education Like a Full-Time Job

If your SAP prescribes a 16-hour online education course, don't drag it out over three weeks.

Action Step: Sit down and complete the prescribed education immediately. The faster you finish the course, the faster your education provider will notify your SAP, which triggers your follow-up evaluation.

4. Pre-Schedule Your Follow-Up Evaluation

Some SAPs have very busy schedules. If you wait until you finish your education to call them back, you might have to wait another two weeks for a follow-up appointment.

Action Step: During your initial evaluation, ask the SAP roughly how long the prescribed education takes. Then, try to tentatively schedule your follow-up evaluation right then and there.

5. Start Hunting for SAP-Friendly Carriers Now

Remember, you cannot order your own Return-to-Duty drug test. An employer has to do it. The worst-case scenario is getting your Notice of Compliance from the SAP and then spending two months trying to find a company that will hire you and order the test.

Action Step: Don't wait until you are finished. Start reaching out to SAP-friendly companies while you are completing your education program so you are ready to hit the ground running.
