The Case for Virtual (Telehealth) Evaluations

For the vast majority of CDL drivers, virtual evaluations are the superior choice.

• Speed to Evaluation: When you are out of work, every day counts. Virtual SAPs usually have a much wider availability window, allowing you to be seen in days rather than weeks.
• No Travel Costs: If you live in a rural area, the nearest DOT-qualified SAP could be a three-hour drive away. Virtual evaluations eliminate travel costs, lodging, and time on the road.
• Broader Selection: You are not limited to the SAP down the street. You can choose a highly-rated, transparently priced SAP located anywhere in your state (or even out of state, depending on specific licensing reciprocity).

The Case for In-Person Evaluations

While Telehealth is convenient, there are still scenarios where an in-person evaluation is beneficial.

Pros of In-Person:

• Technological Barriers: If you do not own a smartphone or computer with a camera, or if you live in an area with notoriously unreliable internet access, an in-person meeting guarantees your evaluation will not be interrupted by technical difficulties.
• Personal Comfort: Some individuals simply communicate better face-to-face. A clinical interview regarding substance use is deeply personal; some drivers prefer sitting across a physical desk from their counselor to build trust.
• Local Treatment Connections: An in-person, local SAP often has deeper connections with local, physical treatment centers, which can be helpful if they end up prescribing intensive outpatient or inpatient rehabilitation.

The Verdict

Both methods are 100% legal, compliant, and treated exactly the same by the FMCSA and prospective employers. Your choice should come down to how fast you need to get back to work and how comfortable you are with technology.
